Bonnie Nicholls Wins First Place Award from San Diego Press Club

It’s weird to write a headline and first paragraph about myself in the third person, but SEO dictates that I say something like Bonnie Nicholls (that’s me) won two awards for excellence in journalism from the San Diego Press Club in 2019.
Now that that’s out of the way (can’t help making a joke about it), here’s the scoop:
I received a first-place award (yippee!) in the PR, Public Information Officer and Trade publications category of general writing for internal publications. The award recognized an article I wrote for Scrum Alliance on agile marketing called Reaping the Benefits of Agile.
Agile is a methodology that gained traction in the software industry to improve efficiency in software development. Agile embraces transparent prioritization, customer involvement, iteration (e.g., try things, fail fast and learn from your mistakes), and effective communication across all parties. Agile is now practiced in departments as varied as finance, HR, and marketing and across industries.
The article I wrote focused on how a marketing team at a San Diego-based company, PayLease, used agile to improve its output, work more effectively with the sales team, and ultimately improve morale. It’s the kind of story I love to tell, because it’s a hero’s journey.
I also received a second-place award in the same category for an article I wrote for SAIC called Ocean Health Tracked Using Satellite Imagery. As someone who lives near the ocean and also dives, I was particularly interested in the work SAIC does for NASA to process satellite imaging. It was a privilege to write this story, because it celebrates science and the importance of monitoring the earth over time.
